December 2021 - Victoria Landry (PGY2, Family Med Emergency Med - Saint John)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Victoria Landry, a PGY2 in Family Medicine Integrated Emergency Medicine (Saint John), is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Landry was nominated by her peers.

"From my perspective," he nomination says, "physicians are meant to lead a life of service, and I can think of no better exemplar of this than Victoria Landry. Clinically, she is kind and compassionate, hard-working, knowledgeable beyond her training level, and dedicated to ongoing learning to better serve her patients."

In addition to service to her patients, her nomination outlines a resident dedicated to her colleagues.

"As a Saint John native, during the COVID pandemic her co-residents were unable to travel home, so Victoria and her husband Joe opened their home and shared their family and holiday celebrations. Victoria is a new mother, and continues to lovingly raise her son Donald while returning to residency. She makes her community better as a consistent and active member of her church. Her selfless dedication to all those around her makes Victoria deserving of this recognition."

November 2021 - Steven Morrison (PGY3, Internal Medicine)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Steven Morrison, a PGY3 in Internal Medicine, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Morrison was nominated by his peers.

"He is an outstanding internal medicine resident both academically and with respect to leadership," his nomination said. "He is our current MTU chief and has gone above and beyond to re-shape MTU to be a better learning experience for all, including more teaching, debrief rounds, senior royal college rounds, and a morning report.

"He also spent countless hours to get us a new beautiful - and bigger - resident lounge this past year. He is a stand out resident and colleague."

September 2021 - Moayd Awad (PGY5, Orthopaedic Surgery)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Moayd Awad, a PGY5 in Orthopaedic Surgery, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Awad was nominated by his peers.

"As a senior ortho resident, Mo is a strong leader in our program," his nomination says. "He leads by demonstrating a careful balance of surgical learning and commitment to patients, with his family life at home. That he does so with just a touch of humour makes him particularly well-liked and respected in our program."

His nomination going on to cite his ability to balance work and life.

"While he makes it look easy, it is an impressive feat juggling long surgical hours with a busy household," it says. "Mo's dedication to excellence in providing orthopaedic care day-in and day-out is a testament to his professionalism and balanced lifestyle."

August 2021 - Natasha Larivee (PGY2, Internal Medicine Saint John)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Natasha Larivee, a PGY2 in Internal Medicine (Saint John), is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Larivee was nominated by her peers.

"Natasha is an exemplary resident," her nomination says. "She always has the patient's best interest in mind and will go above and beyond to provide excellent patient-centred care."

In addition to her strength at patient care, Dr. Larivee is recognized as a leader in her program.

"She is known to always lend a helping hand to her colleagues including helping new PGY1s settle into their first call shifts, staying late to ensure the on-call resident has a smooth call shift, and always being open to switching call shifts/take on extra call to help her co-residents," her nomination says. "She is a role model and advocate for resident wellness and is always willing to provide a strong voice for the resident cohort to help institute improvements in the program."

June 2021 - Declan Lu (PGY3, Internal Medicine)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Declan Lu, a PGY3 in Internal Medicine, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Lu was nominated by his peers.

"Declan has been an exceptional coworker over the past few years," his nomination says. "He is incredibly supportive and kind. He is always willing to lend a hand, stay late post call and pick up extra call shifts when his colleagues are in need."

His strength as a candidate extends beyond his work in the hospital.

"Beyond this, he exemplifies work-life balance and has been a role model to others who have sometimes struggled with this," his nomination says

May 2021 - Johnson Cheung (PGY7, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Johnson Cheung, a PGY7 in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Cheung was nominated by his peers.

"Dr. Cheung is the chief OMFS resident who deserves to be acknowledged for his team-first attitude and commitment to patients before he graduates in June," his nomination says. "Johnson has tirelessly worked over the past six years to excel in our program and to set an example moving forward that has been matched by few."

His nomination goes on to cite a number of reasons Dr. Cheung should be recognized.

"Johnson has been the only OMFS resident to be recognized by the medical school for his contributions to teaching within his class, completed his MSc in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery earlier in the residency program than any of his predecessors, and has always put patients, co-residents and staff before himself."

April 2021 - Ashley Drohan (PGY5, General Surgery)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Ashley Drohan, a PGY5 in General Surgery, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Drohan was nominated by her peers.

"Ashley is our outgoing chief resident, which in our program is a pretty thankless job," her nomination says. "In this role she has truly outdone herself in leading us through an incredibly difficult year due to covid as well as the immense burden of scheduling that arose with it. She has dedicated countless hours to our program to ensure our residents are very well taken care of."

In addition to her work as chief resident, her nomination goes on to describe her as an exemplary teacher, researcher and surgeon.

"She not only is an extremely talented General Surgery resident in the OR, she handled the constant schedule changes with COVID and our accreditation, applied (and got!) a competitive Surgical Oncology fellowship, but she still found time to always answer all of our questions, teach (in and out of the OR), and support the junior residents. She is an amazing resident and we will be sad to see her leave."

March 2021 - Gabrielle Hayduk-Costa (PGY4, Physical Medicine & Rehab)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Gabrielle Hayduk-Costa, a PGY4 in Physical Medicine & Rehab, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Hayduk-Costa was nominated by her peers.

"She is the type of resident we aspire to be," he nomination says. "She’s conscientious, intelligent, and a genuine pleasure to be around. She’s passionate about teaching and that shows in the quality of her teaching sessions at our half days and informal teaching with residents and medical students. She consistently works to improve the quality of our academic half day sessions and utilizes strategies she is learning from her Master’s program so that we all benefit."

Her nomination also outlines that she advocates on behalf of her colleagues to ensure educational goals are met during core rotations, while continually looking for ways to improve the experience.

"We can always count on Gab to motivate us to go to MarDocs events (particularly yoga and evolve boot camps). She manages to balance the high demands of her academic life with being a thoughtful friend, being physically active, and getting lost in a good book."

February 2021 - Marissa LeBlanc (PGY4, Psychiatry)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Marissa LeBlanc, a PGY4 in Psychiatry, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. LeBlanc was nominated by her peers.

"Marissa is our fearless leader: our chief resident extraordinaire who has guided the psychiatry resident body through a global pandemic with flexibility, dedication, and grace," her nomination reads. "She is the ultimate example of combining strengths in academics, research, leadership, wellness, and advocacy."

Her nomination goes on to say that she makes everyone feel heard and valued, and she is well-liked and respected by her peers, colleagues, supervisors, and interdisciplinary team members.

"Marissa is the most efficient problem solver I’ve ever met. She is the person who automatically springs to mind whenever you face an issue you can’t solve on your own. There is literally almost nothing she cannot help you with – from navigating department policy to helping you find a research supervisor to discovering the best hidden gems the city of Halifax has to offer. And if she isn’t sure exactly how to assist, she will help you figure out your next steps and walk beside you as you navigate any challenge of residency training."

January 2021 - Jonathan Melong (PGY5, Otolaryngology)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Jonathan Melong, a PGY5 in Otolaryngology, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Melong was nominated by his peers.

"One of the most admiral qualities Jon has is his natural tendency to help others," his nomination says. "No matter what is going on around him, Jon will always take the time out of his day to teach his students, patients and fellow residents. He is always kind and approachable, allowing others to come to him with questions without the fear of judgement."

It goes on to cite his strength as a leader, while serving as chief resident, as another quality worthy of nomination.

"As you can imagine, Jon is admired and respected by many," his nomination says. "Our nursing team always speaks very highly of him, and our staff surgeons frequently use Jon as an example when teaching us how they like things done. On top of this, patients adore him. He never fails to advocate for his patients and spends a considerable amount of time with patients and their families to ensure they are updated on their condition/treatment. He is a good listener and an excellent communicator."
