October 2019 - Jordan Eng (PGY4, General Surgery)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Jordan Eng, a PGY4 in General Surgery, is our latest Resident of the Month.

Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Eng was nominated for the award by his peers.

"Jordan is the senior resident we all aspire to be: diligent, dedicated, approachable, and encouraging," his nomination reads. "He invariably treats his junior residents and med students with respect, and strikes the often difficult balance between supervising and providing independence."

In addition to his excellence at work, his nomination goes on to outline his ability to strike a work/life balance, and encourage his colleagues to do the same. 

"Jordan understands the importance of happiness both at and away from work. He encourages his teammates to take their earned days off (vacation, lieu days, flex days) and NEVER makes you feel that you're burdening the team by doing so."

As the winner of this award, Dr. Eng will receive a $100 gift card.

September 2019 - Rosalinda Knight (PGY1, Family Medicine Saint John)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Rosalinda Knight, a PGY1 in Family Medicine Saint John, is our latest Resident of the Month.
 
Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Knight was nominated for the award by her peers.

"Rosa is one of the most hard working and pleasant co-residents to work with," her nomination read. "I have come to heavily respect the calm and respectful nature she has brought to our learning sessions."

From hitting the ground running at the start of her PGY1 year, Dr. Knight made an impression on her colleagues in Saint John.

"She is truly a pleasure to be around and always lends a listening ear," her nomination read. "Rosa looks after herself, her family, her peers, and her patients, and I am so lucky to be able to rely on her. For this reason she excels in all domains of the outlined criteria and deserves to be recognized as resident of the month."

As the winner of this award, Dr. Knight will receive a $100 gift card.

July 2019 - Joshua Smalley (PGY6, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Joshua Smalley, a PGY6 in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, is our latest Resident of the Month.
 
Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Smalley was nominated for the award by his peers.

"Dr. Joshua Smalley exemplifies what it is to be a well-rounded, knowledgeable and conscientious resident physician who in addition to his clinical work, has held several leadership roles throughout his residency including associate chief and chief resident, and has sat on multiple committees in residency."

The nomination goes on to show that Dr. Smalley is someone who excels in all aspects of residency.

"Throughout his training, he not only demonstrated superior commitment to his work and care of patients, but he also persevered in his advocacy for residents’ well-being and rights. In addition to his exemplary clinical work, he ensures that his colleagues are listened to and valued, and he is not afraid to advocate on their behalf to promote resident wellness and cohesion within the program."

June 2019 - Margaret Hanley (PGY5, Anesthesia)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Margaret Hanley, a PGY5 in Anesthesia, is our latest Resident of the Month.
 
Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Her nomination described her as a great resident mentor with a good balance between academic and social life.

"She’s an excellent chief because she’s extremely organized and approachable. She’s someone who residents feel comfortable going to with any concerns and she is always there for her colleagues. I have seen Margaret go above and beyond to make her patients feel safe and comfortable. She advocates on their behalf and I can attest that they notice and appreciate her presence."

The nomination goes on to praise her as a kind and compassionate person who excels at many things.

"Whether she is attending a class at SpinCo, adopting an orphaned dog, travelling with her husband, presenting her research at global conferences, or hosting a party for her friends, her ability to do all these things, excel at them, and still be so much fun, makes Margaret a stand out for Resident of the Month. And all this while studying for her Royal College Exam!"

May 2019 - Mandy Peach (PGY3, Integrated Family Medicine Emergency Medicine)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Mandy Peach, a PGY3 in Integrated Family Medicine Emergency Medicine, is our latest Resident of the Month.
 
Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Peach recently finished her term as chief resident and her colleagues thought her tenure deserved recognition.

"From the start of residency, Mandy has taken on many tasks and leadership roles within our program, as well as Dal as a whole," her nomination reads. "From presenting award winning research at CAEP, participating in CARMS evaluations, to implementing very positive changes in her program, she has made a very big impact."

The nomination goes on to extol her as always looking to help her peers, through quality teaching and support for colleagues going through difficult times. 

"In Short, Dr. Peach has had the difficult task of being chief resident of a very dispersed program, while keeping herself to a high academic standard and always making time in her busy schedule for others."

April 2019 - Tish O'Reilly (PGY4, Hematological Pathology)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Tish O'Reilly, a PGY4 in Hematological Pathology, is our latest Resident of the Month.
 
Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. O'Reilly received multiple nominations from her program. As a senior resident nearing the end of her residency, Dr. O'Reilly's dedication to teaching stands out to her junior colleagues.

"Dr. O'Reilly is inspirational in her drive to teach and promote resident education. She holds session in her office and will meet with junior residents on a one-on-one basis to cover material that the junior does not understand. Her love of teaching would greatly enhance any residency program. She encourages those around her to strive to learn the material on a deeper and fundamental level."
 
Her nominations also cite her incredible balance of work, family and colleagues.
 
"Despite being incredibly busy as the mother of a toddler and a final year resident preparing for Royal College certification exams, Tish is never too busy to help a fellow resident in terms of teaching, residency-related questions, resources, etc. On top of being incredibly smart, she is friendly, professional, and welcoming. I can't think of anyone who deserves this award more than Tish!"

March 2019 - Kiel Luhning (PGY5, Obstetrics & Gynaecology)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Kiel Luhning, a PGY5 in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, is our latest Resident of the Month.
 
Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

In his nomination, submitted by his peers, Dr. Luhning is touted as an extraordinary colleague, who regularly goes above and beyond what is expected of him.
 
"He remains calm and collected in all situations, which puts his patients and co-residents at ease. He always encourages residents to speak up in situations that will lead to improvements in our program, and he is a phenomenal advocate. Kiel is always willing to help out his colleagues, whether it be through answering messages at all hours of the day, covering last minute shifts, or orienting new residents. He truly cares about our program and about our residency experience, and it shows."
 
His nomination goes on to praise his example in the area of work-life balance to his co-residents.
 
"From playing rec volleyball, to exploring the province, to making gourmet meals and having us all over to share them, Kiel is as well-rounded as they come. He and his amazing partner Emily have a special way of being able to remind you of what is really important in life - happiness, friends, family, and a good glass of wine."

January 2019 - Brittany Black (PGY5, Obstetrics & Gynaecology)

Maritime Resident Doctors is pleased to announce Dr. Brittany Black, a PGY5 in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, is our latest Resident of the Month.
 
Our Resident of the Month award aims to improve resident well-being by recognizing and rewarding resident colleagues with exceptional achievements while maintaining a work-life balance. The criteria includes academic accomplishments, research activities, social events, family life, community involvement, humanitarian service, leadership, and more.

Dr. Black was nominated by her peers as a way to acknowledge her leadership, commitment to well being, and contribution to the community spirit of the OB/Gyn program.

"Brittany constantly espouses a positive attitude and embodies the sentiment that residency is a team sport," her nomination reads. "She is constantly providing mentorship and support to other residents and is regularly given feedback on her exemplary bedside manner."

The nomination went on to praise her ability to balance a busy resident schedule with preparing for her Royal College exams and family life, including caring for her young daughter.

"It is an absolute pleasure to work with someone as wonderful as Brittany and our residency program is lucky to have her."
